Each one has the tension built in. All you add is the two men.
A good gay erotica story idea is a situation with tension already inside it. Two men want each other, and something small gets in their way. That might be a thin wall, or a rule one of them keeps repeating. The 25 ideas below are starting points I’d happily write. Some of them I already have, so I’ve linked those to show where an idea can go.
Key points
- A strong idea puts desire right next to an obstacle.
- Pick a setting you can picture down to the smell.
- Give each man one want of his own.
- Every character is an adult. Keep school settings out of it.
What makes a good gay erotica story idea?
A good idea gives the men a reason they can’t simply get on with it. Being close creates the want. A rule or a risk slows it down. That gap is where the story lives, so the best ideas build it in from the first line. My guide to building sexual tension between two men covers how to stretch it out.
Ideas built on shared spaces
1. The flatmate who stopped wearing clothes
One man moves in and treats clothes as optional. The other has to live with it. I wrote this as my new roommate’s naked habit, where Alex asks “Mind if I air out?” within minutes of arriving.
2. One bed in a heatwave
Two flatmates share the bigger bed to get through a hot summer. Sleep gets harder every night. The upside of sleeping naked puts Fraser and Kit in exactly this spot in Edinburgh.
3. The hostel with a rule about showers
A Bangkok hostel warns every guest not to have sex in the shower. Two backpackers take it as a dare. The sign still stuck starts there.
4. The bunk across the aisle
He wakes in a shared dorm to find the man opposite already touching himself. Neither of them says a word for a long time. That’s Caught in the Hostel Dorm.
5. The last two in the changing room
After the final class, two training partners take their time getting dressed. Silence does most of the work in What happens in a gay gym changing room after the last class?
Ideas built on strangers
6. The car that reverses back
A man changes for the gym at the side of a country road. A passing driver goes by, then reverses. That’s the whole set-up of What happens when you change by the roadside and a car stops?
7. The jogger at night
A man walks a deserted street at night with nobody about. Then a jogger appears. Streetlight Stranger runs on that one meeting.
8. The hiker on the rock
Two men get talking on a trail, then take a quieter path down with other walkers never far off. That’s Into the canyon.
9. The sleeper train
Two strangers share a compartment on an overnight train. The bunks are a forearm apart, so neither of them sleeps.
10. The stuck lift
A lift stops between floors with two men inside. Their phones have no signal. Give them twenty minutes with a reason to talk.
Ideas built on friendship
11. The straight friend’s fantasy
One friend admits a fantasy while sober. The other agrees to play along. In What happens when your straight friend plays drunk? Tristan plans every minute of the night with Harry first.
12. Sunday football
Two colleagues watch the match in bed every week and call it nothing. Watching football and cuddling in bed is not gay is named after the rule they keep telling themselves.
13. The gym partner’s question
One man asks the other what bottoming actually feels like. The answer turns into a lesson in Does bottoming really hurt for gay men?
14. The balcony workout
A friend uses your home gym when his work day goes badly. One evening the workout turns into something else. That’s Rough Day.
15. The best man
Two single men at a wedding, both bored of the speeches. One of them knows where the spare room is.
Ideas built on being seen
16. The live feed
A night security guard and a resident agree on a private show for one camera. Cum on the security screen keeps it consensual from the first text.
17. The cam show
Friends put on a paid show, with the tips deciding what happens next. The private room turns it into a race.
18. The nude beach
A first visit to a naturist beach brings a man nearby who likes being watched. See First Time on the Nude Beach.
19. The snowy street
A couple on the walk home decide the whole street can watch. That’s Night snow exhibition.
20. The car park after the gym
A quick hookup in a parked car while headlights sweep past. Read Car park after gym hookup.
Ideas built on roles and rules
21. The scripted break-in
A man pays for a scene he’s written in advance. Bend over or I call the cops plays it out in the LA hills.
22. Who tops?
Two men in a steam room settle the question before the towels come off. That’s Do gay men decide who’s the top and who’s the bottom?
23. The week by the sea
One man books a room near the beach. His lover from back home turns up on the second afternoon. Read The sea in front of him and a cock in his hole.
24. The steam room after hours
Two gym regulars stay on after the lights dim. Late Night Steam takes it slowly.
25. The glances in the gym mirror
A man keeps catching the same stranger’s eye across the gym for weeks. Let it build over several parts, the way Late Night Glances does.
How do you turn an idea into a story?
Pick one, then decide whose head we’re in. Give each man one want. Add a single obstacle, then make them choose. Keep it to one scene if it’s your first. My guide to how long a gay erotica story should be helps with length. From there, how to write a gay sex scene takes you through the scene itself, and 11 ways to open an erotic story helps with the first line.
Common mistakes
The biggest is an idea with no obstacle. Two men who meet and have sex at once give the reader nothing to wait for. Another is a setting picked for novelty alone, with no reason for the men to be there. Make every character clearly over 18.
FAQ
Where do erotica writers get story ideas?
From ordinary places with a little privacy. Gyms, flats, hostels and car parks all turn up in my stories. Watch for rules people quietly break.
Can I use the same idea as another writer?
Yes. Tropes repeat right across the genre. The detail is what makes it yours. My guide to classic gay erotica tropes shows how much they overlap.
Does an erotic story need a plot?
A light one. A want with an obstacle is enough for a short story.
How do I start once I’ve picked an idea?
Open in the middle of the moment. How to start writing gay erotica without feeling embarrassed walks you through the first scene.
