From the towel to the walk home, this is where an erotic story shows its heart.
The moments after sex are where you show what the sex meant. Write a few small, true details, such as who moves first or what gets said. That’s often called the afterglow, or aftercare when one man looks after the other. It doesn’t need to be long. Here are 10 ways I write it, counting down to the most intimate.
Key points
- Keep it short, often a few paragraphs.
- Use practical details, since they feel honest.
- Let the first words after sex carry the emotion.
- Show whether this changes anything between them.
What happens straight after?
Start with the body and the mess. Real people deal with both.
10. The clean-up
Practical moments read as real. In Rough Day, Cole dries himself off, and then “He handed me the other towel.” A small kindness, with no speech about it.
9. The first words
What gets said first tells you everything. Cole’s first lines are “Today was fucked,” then “This helped more than the gym would’ve.” It’s a thank you that never says thank you.
8. A last touch
A brush of hands keeps them connected for one more beat. In the steam room story Do gay men decide who’s the top and who’s the bottom?, “their hands brushed once more under the spray.” Neither of them comments on it.
How do you write the goodbye?
Many erotic stories end with the men going separate ways. How they part shows the reader what’s left between them.
7. Separate ways
Let them leave without a fuss. The steam room story ends with the two men swapping “one last grin, then went off in different directions.” The grin keeps it warm, while the parting keeps it a hookup.
6. The walk back
Keep the touching going in public, quietly. In The sea in front of him and a cock in his hole, the narrator walks back to the room with his hand “on the small of his back, under his shirt.” Nobody else on the street knows.
5. Watching him go
The man left behind can say the most. At the end of Late Night Glances, “Ethan watched Reid climb into his truck.” The scene stays with Ethan, alone, still feeling it.
What about later that day?
The afterglow can carry on hours after the sex.
4. Alone, replaying it
Let him think about it in bed that night. In the roadside story, Jude goes to bed “with the window open and the road playing in his head.” The story gets a second, quieter climax.
3. The text
A message after the fact can be filthy and tender at once. In Watching football and cuddling in bed is not gay, the text reads “you washing that or leaving it.” It’s about a sheet, which is the point.
2. The everyday gesture
Show a normal gesture that now means more. In the football story, Rhys “squeezed the back of my neck in the doorway the way he does after a bad meeting,” except his thumb stays longer. A tiny change carries the whole relationship.
What’s the most intimate way to end the afterglow?
Let them stay.
1. Falling asleep together
In The upside of sleeping naked, Fraser and Kit wipe up with the sheet and go back to sleep “with their shins hooked together.” No declaration needed. Two men choosing the same bed says it.
What if the scene is cold on purpose?
Some stories want distance after sex, and that’s an afterglow too. In Bend over or I call the cops, the narrator locks up and washes his hands, then puts the shirt in the bin. The paid scene is over, and the practical steps show it. Cold can be just as telling as warm, as long as it’s a choice.
Common mistakes
The biggest is skipping it: he comes, the story stops. Another is a sudden love speech that the rest of the story hasn’t earned. Keep it in proportion to what came before. My list of 9 ways to end an erotic story covers the very last line, and 12 ways to describe an orgasm covers the moment before all this.
FAQ
What is aftercare in erotica?
Aftercare is when partners look after each other once sex is over, especially after rough or intense scenes. On the page, it can be as simple as a towel or a question. My guide to writing consent covers checking in during the scene too.
How long should the afterglow be?
A few paragraphs in most short stories. Long enough for one or two details, then end it.
Should the men talk after sex?
If they would. One or two lines usually beat a conversation.
Does a hookup story need an afterglow?
A short one. Even “see you” tells the reader something.
